Risks of Having a Colonoscopy

Although these happen very rarely, there are risks to be understood when thinking of having the colonoscopy performed.  These risks may include:

  • Bowel (colon) perforation, in which the colonic wall is punctured.
  • Persistent bleeding from a polypectomy site.
  • Adverse reaction to medications and sedatives.
(Used in our lab are Demerol and Versed, Stadol, Xylocaine jelly)
  • Respiratory depression.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and bloating.

If you have any concerns about these risks, please speak with a nurse, your primary care physician, or Dr. Early would be happy to speak with you.
